HANAUMA BAY
Species Diversity Map
About This Map
This map is intended as a living, evolving repository of marine biodiversity in Hanauma Bay, O‘ahu. It builds on the Digital Coral Ark’s mission to compile longitudinal photographic and video documentation of coral reefs via community contribution and archival research.
We begin with the collections contributed by John P. Hoover, whose decades of photographic work and detailed mapping of Zones and Areas inform much of the baseline spatial framework in Hanauma Bay.
To that foundation, we’ll add species records (corals, fishes, invertebrates, etc.) from the Digital Coral Ark collection — each mapped with date and location within the bay, when available.
Over time, the map will expand — layering in newer contributions from citizen scientists, researchers, and divers.
We hope this map, and the Digital Coral Ark behind it, become both a tools for public engagement and resources for monitoring ecological change, spotting range shifts, and helping guide reef restoration efforts for many years to come.
NOTE: Use the search bar to explore species by date, common name, or contributor. Use the Zone and Area toggles to see which species are in each. The map itself is not clickable. This map can be viewed on mobile, but it’s best suited for desktop or laptop. Enjoy the fish!
How You Can Help
Submit Images & Observations
We welcome new contributions from hobbyist divers, snorkelers, marine scientists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts. If you have images (or video) of species not yet on the map, or better-quality photographs of existing ones, we would love to include them. What makes a useful submission?
Good resolution and clarity so the organism can be identified
Date and approximate location (ideally with GPS or reef area/zone context)
Ownership rights (you must own or have rights to the image)
Willingness to share the image under our archival / educational usage terms
You can submit via our Contribute Photos/Videos page. Every contribution helps us fill gaps in the map, reduce “data blind spots,” and enrich our collective reef memory.
Volunteer
Volunteer as a mapper, data curator, or contributor (see our volunteer opportunities).
Spread the Word
Share this project with your dive/snorkel community; we hope to reach people who hold valuable visual records.
Thank you for helping us build a richer visual archive of Hanauma Bay’s reef life. With your support, this map will continue to grow — becoming ever more useful to the public, scientists, educators, and reef stewards alike.
Contact us if you have historical collections (slides, negatives, digital archives) you’d like to help preserve via the Digital Coral Ark.
